Nestled in the southern region of the Seven Sisters Chain lies Al Shabareer reef, an aquatic haven showcasing incredible drop-offs, enchanting coral gardens and huge pelagic fish. The reef walls are carpeted in dazzling displays of greens, oranges, reds and pinks, and combine a multitude of textures to delight the senses. With three different sites to explore, Al Shabareer offers some of the most spectacular dives in the Red Sea, if not the world.
Each of the three sites features a deep dive down to the underwater landscape below. Sandy plateaus extend out into the blue, and underwater ledges reveal hidden grottos of intricate gorgonias, feathery Nephtheidae and exquisite wire corals. Orange anthias and marbled groupers dance above the reef, providing vibrant splashes of colour, while schools of sweetlips glide around unfazed by passing divers. Although this part of the Red Sea is not averse to tourism, the tropical corals remain untouched, bursting with colour and life.
Surrounding the reef is a strong northerly current, making swimming challenging in places. However, experienced divers will be greatly rewarded with the chance to see pelagic fish such as barracuda, jackfish and even reef sharks. It’s important to note that all three dive sites require advanced or technical diving skills, and the current can be medium to strong.
Al Shabareer is the perfect option for those wanting a little bit of everything. Site 2 is a wall dive, great for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Meanwhile, featuring gentle slopes as well as shear drop-offs, sites 1 and 3 offer slightly more diverse terrains that will cater to those in search of adventure and relaxation in one go. Overall, Al Shabareer reef promises an unforgettable diving experience for those who dare to venture beneath the surface.
It is estimated that more than 80 per cent of the ocean remains unexplored, meaning that there could be countless species of marine life, geological formations and other discoveries yet to be made in the depths of the ocean.
