Situated on the eastern side of Jazirat Abu Shosha Island, Extended Wall is a challenging yet exciting site that is suited to most levels of divers, from beginners through to freedivers.
Starting at a depth of just 5m and progressing down to a depth of 25m, the route will carry divers down the reef wall, which is adorned with an abundance of vibrant hard and soft coral, ensuring an intriguing descent.
This offers the ideal opportunity to come face-to-face with shoals of Red Sea bannerfish and the island’s green and hawksbill turtles. The site is close to these gentle turtles’ main nesting area, so there’s a good chance of sighting one of these shy herbivores, who are usually too preoccupied by their search for food to worry about divers.
The wall also features an assortment of fissures. While most are too narrow to enter, there is one with a generous width of 1.5m and a depth of 15m. Here, divers will be able to swim through and observe smaller critters before circling around and returning. There’s little chance of feeling claustrophobic as you swim through, however, as the crack is open at the surface and flooded with sunlight. However, if you want to see the aquatic life in greater detail, a torch will help to illuminate the darker crevices.
It is magical to dive with a turtle as they cruise about munching on soft coral and seagrass. But if you want it to linger longer, be sure to move slowly, keep low and try to position yourself in full view in front of the turtle. If you approach it from behind, it might mistake you for a predator and swim away.
