Less explored than other shipwrecks in the Makkah Region, and so far unspoiled by tourism, the SS African on the Abu Madefe reef is an underwater haven is suitable for divers of all abilities.

The British-owned ship, built in 1873, is thought to have been on a voyage from Cardiff to Jeddah when it sank near the shore with a cargo full of coal. The wreck has been here for over a century and what is left of the ship is now completely encrusted in hard coral. The vivid pinks and reds that adorning its frame means it blends perfectly into the ocean floor.

This dive of 45–60 minutes begins south of the Abu Madefe reef amongst the rusty remnants of the SS African. With the wreck reaching a maximum depth of 17m, the site has both shallow and deeper areas, providing plenty of scenery for surface snorkellers while also challenging more experienced divers.

Aside from a small section of the stern, still identifiable, the rest of the boat has been broken down over time into smaller fragments. South lies a large metal cylinder believed to be the ship’s boiler.

Schools of snappers, jackfish and rainbow runners can be seen swimming around the deeper areas of the wreck and divers may also be lucky enough to spot barracudas. Darting anthias, attracted to the outer fringes of the reef also provide enchanting pops of colour against the dazzling array of beautiful corals.

A visibility of 25m makes this a great spot for photography enthusiasts. So, divers should make sure to bring a camera with them.

Enshrined in colour and engulfed by shoals of dazzling tropical fish, this dazzling shipwreck has become one with the reef.
